CWEA SFBS May Dinner Meeting - The Evolving Role of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Water Management
May 21, 2026
Contact Hours:
1.0
Description:
Click Here for Flyer Machine learning (ML) and Artificial intelligence (AI) are rapidly emerging as disruptive technologies being applied to water and wastewater systems. The true value of ML/AI depends not on algorithms alone, but on how effectively they are integrated with engineering and operations judgment and workforce capabilities.
This presentation examines practical ML/AI applications across the water sector – including multi-day influent flow forecasting, use of soft- sensors for biological process insights – grounded in real operational constraints and scalability across diverse facilities.
Drawing on applied research and innovative real-world implementation, we’ll highlight the value of modern ML/AI technologies, highlighting where ML/AI provides enhanced value, reliability and operational readiness – and where limitations remain.
The presentation emphasizes a human-AI collaboration framework, positioning ML/AI as a meta-technology enabling and augmenting, not replacing, operator expertise and engineering reasoning.
Presented by Sandeep Sathyamoorthy Director of Water Innovation and technology, Stantec
